My Son, The Ringbearer

Oh, what a huge weekend we had. Sam played ringbearer in our close friends' wedding, so we spent most of our Friday and Saturday with decorating, socializing, beautifying and eating. Sam had such a huge time-- if you remember, he was a little nervous about having to marry the flower girl, who he hadn't met. SO not a problem.

When we walked into the church for the rehearsal, Sam and Ally were introduced, and within minutes, were arm in arm running up the aisles. Before we left for the dinner, Ally (and her younger brother) had to give Sam a kiss. Then at the dinner, they ran around Bass Pro looking at the big fish and "riding" the tractor-type-hunting things. As a bonus, Ally had two brothers-- one younger and one older-- so the four of them ran around like crazies all weekend. It couldn't have been better.

Sam loved his tux too. When we tried it on, he asked "Can I wear the shoes now?" (with his jean shorts) and "What part of this do I get to keep?" He offered to wear it to the rehearsal and church on Sunday too.

The day of the wedding, Sam hung around the church with the groomsmen (we had to be there 2 hours early). He was so well-behaved and took good care of his tux so he didn't get dirty. He walked down the aisle with Ally and gave Ben a five when he got to the front. He stood quietly, only occasionally wiggling. He stood so close to Ben that the best man had to pull him back a little bit on occasion. He waved a couple of times to Stuart and I and to Mamaw and Papaw, but wasn't in general distracting. He got lots of compliments on how great he did.

Kate, on the other hand, was a little more lively. We were on the second row and she identified Meaghan aloud when she came down the aisle. She wiggled around and stayed quiet drinking (spilling) water from a water bottle. At one point, she decided she wanted to sit with Bill and Janet. "I want Janet" she declared. Good grief. She wasn't the only small child vocalizing, but she was the only one on the second row doing so.

The best part of the day for Sam was the reception. He was quite the showman-- dancing with the ladies and working up a sweat. When the day was over, Ally broke down in tears. Sam crouched down by her sympathetically and we had to go back in about 3 times to say 'one more goodbye'. Poor thing.

When we got in the car, Sam kept turning around, looking out the back window. He said, "Mom, will I ever see her again." I thought about lying, but instead offered, "Probably not." There were no tears, but he was definitely disappointed about ending his day. I think this might count as his first broken heart. My sensitive boy.

Incredible Summer Swimming

Yesterday we had an Incredible Summer Swim Party at the Whorton's. The kids had a great time splashing and playing in the pool that was not overrun by hoards of matching-t-shirt wearting, sweaty, 3rd graders from the local summer rec program. It was said that we moms were "going glam," by attempting to hold on to some small thread of dignity in our shades and un-wet hair. Then, a kiddie delight, grilled hot dogs. What could be better than that?

I didn't take any pictures. Sorry. But I still haven't added any from our last summer fun trip to tour the Chocolate Factory and have lunch at Fritz's train restaurant at Crown Center. So I'll put those up instead. Just remember: yesterday, swimming. Two weeks ago, chocolate. It's a good life.
